The Minting Cup is an exciting new competition for young musicans (aged 14 and under) and is kindly sponsored by the Minting Family. Mr Harry Minting, a local musician who widely supported all music in the Bromley Borough and although sadly no longer with us, we hope that The Minting Cup can keep alive a wonderful memory.
The music shop, HARRY MINTING MUSIC, opened in Coney Hall, West Wickham in 1962, and supplied musicians in the Bromley area with new and second-hand instruments, sheet music and a repair service until Harry’s retirement in 1978. During the ‘swinging’ 1960’s, the instrument of choice for many young people was the guitar, and in the evenings the shop became a venue for guitar lessons. Harry was ably assisted by his wife Nora, who managed the stock of sheet music and the purchase of violins from the London auction houses. For several years after his retirement, Harry continued to repair instruments and re-hair violin bows from his home in Coney Hall.
Harry’s musical career started as a child around 1920, when he was taught to play the concertina – an instrument on which he became a leading exponent – working for the BBC and the London Paladium, including associations with Stanley Holloway and Eric Robinson. He also played guitar in ‘dance bands’ of the times.
In memory of Harry and Nora Minting, and their contribution to music in Bromley, the family has presented the Minting Cup to further the promotion of music among young people in the Borough.
