DATE: Thursday 30 March 2017
TIME: 19:00 - 21:00
BYMT Jazz school would take an innovative approach to jazz training that would enable young and young-at-heart people to develop their jazz composition and improvisation skills through engaging with group musical activity.
Jazz School will take a practical, performance based approach to learning in a supportive, inclusive and nurturing group. Through the playing and study of jazz repertoire the school will cover the essential requirements for composition and improvisation, including ear training, improvising, arrangements, transcription, rhythmic skills, developing harmonic understanding and knowledge, and building a jazz vocabulary.
Jazz School will take place at BYMT every other Thursday evening. It is opened for entry to all young people aged 11-18, and all young-at-heart (teachers, music tutors, adults, parents, etc), on any instrument, if they are Grade 3 and above.
Numbers are limited to 20 students to ensure that everyone gets the opportunity to play in every session. Enrolment is by application.
In addition we will hold an annual Master Class for Jazz school students plus other interested young people, delivered by the Royal Academy of Music tutors Pete Churchill, Deputy Head of Jazz and Nikki Iles, Professor of Piano and Jazz.
Jazz School compositions and participants will feed into BYMT’s two existing jazz bands, Junior Jazz and New Generation Big Band, who hold regular concerts and concert tours, and thus provide a platform for young composers and young musicians to progress in their musicianship.
The participants can be:
- of any age
- any musical instrument
- performing standard of gr.3 and above
5 sessions per term: only £31/term
Sessions take place on alternative Thursdays from 7-9pm at the BYMT. For particular dates, please check regularly the Events page at www.bymt.co.uk
First session: 19 January 2017, Thursday 7pm

The school’s work will culminate with a mass EASTER JAZZ DAY on the 7th April, led by the Royal Academy Jazz department tutors Pete Churchill and Nikki Isles.
