Jazz School

JAZZ SCHOOL 

Jazz School tackles jazz training from an innovative angle that enables all musicians to develop their jazz composition and improvisation skills through engaging in group musical activity.

This ensemble takes place at BYMT on alternative Thursday evenings. There is a fee of £50 for adults, and a discounted price of £31 for under-18s which covers five sessions.

This course takes a practical, performance based approach to learning in a supportive, inclusive and nurturing way. Through the playing and study of jazz repertoire the course will cover the essential requirements for composition and improvisation, including ear training, arrangements, transcription, rhythmic skills, developing harmonic understanding and knowledge, and building a jazz vocabulary.

It is open for entry to participants of any age, whether or not the are a BYMT student, on any instrument, minimum Grade 3 standard.

Numbers are limited to ensure that everyone gets the opportunity to play in every session.


SESSIONS: 

BLUE NOTE group: 6.00pm, for younger and less experienced performers.

BIRDLAND group: 7.30pm, for more confident players. No age restrictions.

WHO:

Participants of any age and any instrument, to a           minimum of Grade 3 standard. Members do not have to be BYMT students.

FEES: 

There is a fee of £50 per adult, and a discounted price of £31 for students under 18 years of age. This covers the five sessions.

Playing and studying jazz repertoire enables you to explore and develop essential musical skills including: 

  • instant composition
  • improvisation
  • ear training
  • rhythmic skills
  • harmonic understanding and knowledge 
  • arrangements and transcriptions
  • building a jazz vocabulary
  • performance opportunities

5 sessions per term: only £31 (under 18s)/£50 (over 18s) / term

Sessions take place on alternative Thursdays from 7-9pm at the BYMT. For particular dates, please check regularly the Events page at www.bymt.co.uk 

First sessions for the Summer term: 4 May, Thursday 6pm and 7:30pm
