Summer Term Repertoire for Jazz School

This term's repertoire for BYMT Jazz School will focus on two pieces of music.

"Cantaloupe Island" by Herbie Hancock as recorded on the 1964 album "Empyrean Isles"

and "Afro Blue" by Mongo Santamaria as heard on the compilation "Mongo's Greatest Hits"

Both of these tracks are available for immediate download from the iTunes Store. It is very important that you know these recordings very well, which means having listened to them at the very least 10 times. You should own these recordings and have them on your phone or ipod so you can listen to them at every opportunity, even when you have no wifi, and not rely on streaming them from youtube.

It is very important that you know these particular versions of these tunes and not other "cover" versions. There have been many different versions of these tunes recorded by different artists. We are learning the original versions and playing from transcriptions of these recordings, not from "Real books" which may be in different keys.

It is important to always learn the original or "definitive" recordings of a tune and also if you have these recordings you can practice along with them using the sheet music from the workshop.
